The department comprises of four major divisions: Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and Molecular Diagnosis Centre. We offer consultative services of experienced professionals in various disciplines, clinical scientists and medical laboratory scientists to assist clinicians in both diagnostic and research capacities.
Our department is able to extend our services to many local medical institutions, private laboratories and to countries in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, through our
NUH Referral Laboratory (NRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NUH.
Clinical Chemistry
The CORE laboratory is a highly automated laboratory, providing round the clock services for a wide range of tests. Our comprehensive laboratory automation system provides centrifugation, aliquoting and archival services for all samples and analysis for basic chemistry and immunoassay tests.
Our testing menu includes blood gases, renal panel, liver panel, calcium studies, lipid studies, iron studies, cardiac studies, therapeutic drugs, immunosuppressant drugs, urine chemistries, urinalysis, fluid studies, rapid tests, endocrine parameters, specific proteins, first trimester testing and other miscellaneous tests.
The Infectious Serology Laboratory performs serological testing on a wide range of infectious diseases as well as autoimmune diseases. The laboratory is also responsible for 24-hour donor transplant screening services.
The Special Chemistry Laboratory supports testing in myeloma work ups, HbA1c and HbA2/F quantitation with Hb variant typing, pheochromocytoma screening and oligoclonal band testing.
The Medical Centre Laboratory is a fully operational satellite testing facility that supports a limited menu of chemistry and haematology testing for urgent cases. We appreciate the need to support outpatient ambulatory care, and recognise this as an important developing trend.
Point of Care (POC) services offer tests which are beneficial to patient management due to its availability at the bedside. Test menu includes blood gases and electrolytes, glucose, PT/INR, glycated haemoglobin, haemoglobin, creatinine, urine dipsticks, and urine pregnancy test.
Our client services provide support in referring tests which are not offered in NUH, to appropriately accredited laboratories within Singapore and around the world.

Haematology

| The Haematology Division comprises a range of routine and specialised tests, common among them being full blood profiles, coagulation, fluid counts and ESR. Haematology staff also provide technical assistance for the collection of bone marrow biopsies and support services in haemopathology.
Other foci of haematology are haemoglobinopathies, bone marrow analysis, flow cytometric analysis, cytogenetics, stem cell processing, and blood transfusion.
|
The Flow Cytometry Laboratory performs flow cytometric analysis used by clinicians in diagnosing, monitoring and treating patients with immunophenotype testing requests on blood, bone marrow and lymph node cell suspensions.
Cytogenetics Laboratory provides chromosomal studies of haematological and congenital / constitutional disorders; which include chromosomal karyotyping and molecular cytogenetics by FISH.
The Blood Transfusion Service ensures that services delivered for blood transfusion are safe, auditable, timely, and able to meet both local and international guidelines for good transfusion practice.
The Stem Cell Laboratory processes peripheral stem cell and bone marrow products for transplantation purposes. It also supports bone marrow, PBSC, donor lymphocyte, and cord blood cryopreservation.
