Telephones

For patients staying in Deluxe Suite, 'A' and 'B1' Class wards, your telephone extension is indicated on your telephone. Between 10pm and 7am, your incoming calls will be handled through our Call Assist Centre to ensure that your rest is not disturbed. To make an extension call, dial "9" followed by the telephone number you wish to connect. For overseas calls, please dial "0" to contact our Call Assist Centre.

Note: Telephone charges for overseas calls will be included in your hospital bill and are not claimable through Medisave.

Television

Local television programmes and SCV channels are available for patients in Deluxe, 'A' and 'B1' Class. For patients in 'B2' and 'C' Class wards, local television programmes are available from the TV Set in the Day Room.

When watching television in a shared facility, we request that you lower the volume so as not to disturb your roommates.

Toiletries

Patients in Deluxe, 'A' and 'B' Class wards will receive an amenity pack containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, shower cap and comb. Shampoo and shower gel are also available in the shower room in the ward for your use.

If there is anything else you may need to make your stay more comfortable, please approach your ward nurses.

Room Lights

You can control the room lightings using the control panel which can be found at your bedside and on the nurse call handset.

Bed

Your bed can be adjusted to a position most comfortable to you. You can adjust it by using the control panels on both sides of your bed or through remote control.

Overbed Table

The overbed table is specially designed to enable you to eat or write while in bed, or sitting on a chair. To adjust the height of the table top, release the lever beneath the table and shift the tabletop gently.

Nurse Call System

Please press the red button on the handset of the Nurse Call System located at your bedside and in the bathroom if you need any assistance from our nurses.

Air-Con Control

If your ward is air-conditioned, the temperature of your room can be adjusted using the control panel located near the entrance to your room.

Laundry Service

Laundry service is available for patients staying in Kent Ridge Wing 2. Please ask the nurse for the price list.

Newspapers/Mail

A copy of The Straits Times will be delivered daily to the Deluxe, 'A' and 'B' Class patients. Please let your nurse know if you prefer to receive Lianhe Zaobao or Berita Harian. Daily newspapers are also available in all the wards' Day Rooms.

Request for Change of Type of Accommodation 

You may request for a change to a different ward type at any time during your hospitalisation except when the patient is in a "classless" facility such as the Intensive Care Unit or High Dependency Ward. To change your choice of accommodation, please approach our ward nurses. All requests for changes are subject to availability of the bed types. You may be placed on a waiting list if there is no available bed type of your choice. 

Upgrading of Accommodation 

All charges (except general ward room charges) incurred at the subsidised ward till upgrading will be re-calculated and charged according to the higher ward type.

Downgrading of Accommodation 

Resident patients can only downgrade from Deluxe, 'A' or 'B1' wards to 'B2' or 'C' wards if they pass Means Testing*.

Downgrading to 'A' or 'B1' class wards does not require Means Testing* but is subject to the availability of beds.

Note: Non-resident patients are not allowed to downgrade to 'B2' and 'C' class wards.

You may approach your ward nurses or Patient Service Centres to apply for Means Testing*.

* Means Testing is used to assess a patient's financial circumstances to determine whether he/she is eligible to downgrade to subsidised care.

Pre-Admission

Except for emergency cases, admission to the hospital is generally based on our doctors' referrals during your outpatient consultation. Our staff at the Specialist Outpatient Clinic/Centre will arrange for your admission and advise you on your estimated cost of the hospitalisation and the mode of payment, as well as all other information and preparations for your admission.

Surgery 

If you are scheduled for a surgery or procedure, you may need to undergo pre-admission investigations to ensure you are fit for surgery. This includes obtaining your clinical history and conducting basic investigations such as blood tests and/or x-rays. Please inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma or drug allergies.

Admission Registration

On the day of your admission, please register at the respective Patient Service Centre:

• Patient Service Centre 3 (for Deluxe, Class A wards), located at Kent Ridge Wing, Level 3
  
• Patient Service Centre 4 or 5 (for Class B1/B2/C wards), located at Main Building, Level 4 and 5

Deposit

You may be required to place a deposit of the entire estimated bill size upon admission.

If there is a requirement to place a deposit, our staff will assist to calculate the amount upon admission during financial counseling.

Payment can be made by cash, credit cards or NETS at our Patient Service Centres on the day of admission. Receipts will be issued upon payment.

Partial or waiver of deposit is accepted if a Letter of Guarantee from the employer or insurance company, MediShield Life, Medisave, Hospital Identity Card (HIC), Civil Service Concession (CSC) card or any other benefit card is presented upon admission.

Additional deposits may be required when the interim bill exceeds the initial deposit or when Medisave balance is insufficient.

Before Admission

On the eve or morning of your admission, our staff will contact you to confirm your bed reservation. As such, please provide us with the number that you can be reached.

Admission to your choice of ward is subject to availability. If your preferred choice is not available, an alternative choice of accommodation will be offered.

Change of Admission
Should you need to cancel or postpone your admission, please contact the staff at the respective Specialist Outpatient Clinic/Centre by calling the telephone number listed on your Admission Form.

All patients will be provided with pyjamas for their hospital stay. Patients who wish to wear their own pyjamas may do so.

Toiletries and slippers are provided for patients staying in Deluxe and Class A wards.

Items Not To Bring for your Stay

Please do not bring valuables or excessive cash for your stay. The hospital will not be responsible for any loss or damage to patients' personal property.

For all patients' safety, please do not bring or use personal health equipment/devices or home appliances to the ward. The use of heat emitting devices is strictly prohibited.

Orientation At The Ward

To help you settle in, our ward staff will orientate you to the ward and the facilities available. You can also expect a visit by the ward doctor. This may involve taking a detailed medical history and ordering of tests, if necessary.

No Smoking Allowed

Smoking is prohibited by law throughout the hospital premises.

Daily Ward Routine

The routine in the ward includes activities such as ward rounds by doctors, medication rounds, meals, visiting hours and bedtime. In addition, doctors will order like laboratory tests, x-ray, treatment and other procedures and these will take place when required. Should you have any concern, please approach the nurses. 

Wrist Identification Band

A wrist band indicating your name, NRIC and ward number will be issued to you upon your arrival at the ward. Please wear it at all times during your stay at the hospital as this enables our staff to verify your identity and determine if you have any drug allergy or likelihood of falls.

Private Nursing

Should you wish to engage a private nurse during your stay with us, please inform our nurses.

Multicultural Services

We have a range of services designed to meet specific cultural needs such as language, dietary and religious requirements. If you have specific needs, please inform the staff caring for you.

Meals

We offer different meal selections prepared under the supervision of our dietitians.

Our meals are served at the following hours:

Breakfast: 7.45am to 8.30am
Morning Tea: 10.00am to 10.30am
Lunch: 12.00pm to 1.30pm
Afternoon Tea: 3.00pm to 3.30pm
Dinner: 6.00pm to 7.30pm
Nightcap: 8.00pm to 8.30pm

Emergency Procedures

We have procedures in place to handle emergencies. Our staff are trained to adhere to these procedures during an emergency situation such as a fire. Please follow the instructions of our staff in the unlikely event of the need to evacuate the ward.

Leaving The Hospital Premises

Your safety and well-being are our utmost concern. Please remain in the hospital premises till you are fit for discharge. If you wish to leave the ward for any reason, please discuss with your doctor or nurse. Patients who wish to be discharged from the hospital against doctor's advice will be required to sign an AOR (At Own Risk) form.

Home Leave

If you need to go home to attend to any urgent matter, you may request for home leave from your doctor.

Referral to Social Work Service

If you have any personal, practical or family matter that is causing you concern, you may ask to see a social worker for advice or assistance through our ward staff.

Personal Mobility Aids (PMAs), such as motorised wheelchairs, are not Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs). PMDs, including motorised scooters, hoverboards etc., may be carried or towed but cannot be used within the hospital's premises as a safety precaution.

If you are admitted or scheduled for admission in NUH:​

• PMAs are not allowed in the wards. Please make arrangements to bring your PMA home.
  
• Wheelchairs are available for your use. Please inform our staff if you need one during your stay in NUH.

• Charging of PMAs is strictly not allowed in the wards as a safety precaution.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Where can I park my PMA if I am admitted into the hospital and do not have the means to bring it home?

There is a designated parking area located at Kent Ridge Wing Level 3, where you may park your PMA for the duration of your stay in NUH. You will be required to sign an indemnity form for the use of this designated parking area.
