  • ​NUH appointed as the dedicated surgery site for the National Pancreas Transplant Programme.

    MOH approved the National Pancreas Transplant Programme as a mainstream service.

  • NUH team involved in the discovery of new species of bacteria.

    A new species of bacteria was unexpectedly discovered and named Staphylococcus singaporensis sp.nov (S. singaporensis), after Singapore. It is part of the Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) complex, a common bacterial cause of infections. ​

  • A clinical trial led by a team of NUH dietitians and doctors found that lifestyle intervention enabled by a mobile app called Nutritionist Buddy (nBuddy) brings successful weight loss in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients.

  • ​NUH Department of Anaesthesia, in partnership with a team of researchers from the National University of Singapore, develops a reusable, foldable and sterilisable 'shield' to protect healthcare workers performing droplet and aerosol generating procedures on COVID-19 patients.

2019

  • ​NUH opened a new one-stop specialist centre on 14 January 2019 to provide outpatient care for young patients. The new Khoo Teck Puat-National University Children's Medical Institute consolidates the paediatric outpatient services – medical, nursing and clinical support services such as art therapy, child life therapy, dietetics and rehabilitation – under one roof, making it convenient for both parents and patients.

    In 2010, the Department of Paediatrics was renamed the Khoo Teck Puat-National University Children's Medical Institute in recognition of the generous donation from the estate of Khoo Teck Puat to support the advancement of paediatric education, research and patient care.

  • ​Researchers from NUH and NUS discovered the structures of proteins called human leukocyte antigen (HLA) associated with organ transplant rejection, which could lead to the development of inhibitors that can prevent or treat chronic transplant rejection.

  • ​The new building for the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore was officially opened by Minister of Health Mr Gan Kim Yong on 5 July 2019. The new Centre synergises clinical services, education and research facilities under one roof. Singapore's only dental school, NUS Faculty of Dentistry, is also housed in the new facility which has the infrastructure to support an increased student intake as well as train and nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals.

  • ​NUH’s Happy Ageing Promotion Programme for You (HAPPY), a physical exercise programme to help frail senior citizens improve their mental well-being, memory, functional ability and strength expands to more locations across Singapore.

  • ​NUH clinician leads in a $2.6-million multi-centre clinical trial using stem cells to repair liver cirrhosis as an alternative for those with end-stage disease, whose cure is currently a liver transplant.

  • ​Doctors from the NUH Department of Urology collaborate with the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore, to successfully develop the Percutaneous-Access-to-Kidney-Assist Device (PAKAD). Showcased at TechInnovation 2017, the innovation allows enhanced precision during surgery for the removal of large or complex kidney stones and enhances patient safety and outcome.

  • ​NUH, together with the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and a medical technology company, develop HABITS-GDM, a mobile application that aims to prevent excess weight gain and helps manage gestational diabetes in pregnant women.

  • ​The NUH Sports Centre, a dedicated facility for integrated care for sports and exercise-related conditions, is officially opened by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Ms Grace Fu on 22 Jan.

  • ​The team at the National University Centre for Organ Transplantation (NUCOT) successfully performs a liver transplant involving Singapore’s first altruistic non-directed liver donor.

  • ​The Division of Endocrinology embarks on a landmark $20-million study called APT-2D (Assessing the Progression to Type 2 Diabetes) which seeks to identify the biomarkers of progression of Type 2 Diabetes, or factors that affect a person’s susceptibility to developing the condition. 

  • ​The NUH Division of Nephrology and National Healthcare Group Polyclinics successfully reduce kidney deterioration in diabetic patients with kidney disease by 28% through the Nephrology Evaluation, Management and Optimisation (NEMO) Programme. In recognition of their contribution to healthcare, the team is conferred the National Clinical Excellence Team Award by the Ministry of Health.

  • ​The Paediatric team accurately diagnoses and successfully treats a case of Omenn Syndrome, an extremely rare disease which was previously never seen in Singapore.

  • ​NUH launches the Mobile Hearing Clinic service to provide comprehensive hearing test, hearing aid fittings and aural rehabilitation services in the community. This novel initiative by the Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) – Head and Neck Surgery aims to make hearing services more accessible and to raise public awareness about how hearing loss can impact daily life adversely. The initiative is expected to benefit some 8,000 Singaporeans aged 40 and above over a two-year period.

  • ​The Orthopaedic Surgery Department offers scoliosis patients 10 years and younger a new treatment - in the form of a magnetic control growing rod - that spares them from multiple surgeries.

  • ​Deputy Director of Nursing, Ng Sow Chun, is awarded the prestigious Practice of the Year award from the Association for Patient Experience, a non-profit organisation sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic in the United States. NUH is the first institution in Asia to receive the award.

  • The new Outpatient Pharmacy Automation System goes ‘live’, promising enhanced accuracy and safety, and shorter wait time for patients.


  • ​The National University Centre for Organ Transplantation (NUCOT) team performs kidney transplant on a 19-year-old patient, making him Singapore’s youngest ABO-incompatible renal recipient.

  • ​A research, by the NUH and NCIS, based on miR-355 expressions allows doctors to work out the risk level of a child with leukemia, as well as the rate of survival as early as the point of diagnosis.

  • ​NUH Department of Pathology receives accreditation from the Accreditation Committee of The College of American Pathologists (CAP) in May. This is an international recognition of the high standard of the services provided and the organisation’s commitment to quality and patient safety.

  • ​NUH achieves the HIMSS Stage Six Hospital status in June. It is one of four Singapore hospitals and among the initial few public healthcare institutions in the Asia Pacific region to achieve the HIMSS Stage 6 Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Adoption Model award presented by HIMSS Analytics.

  • ​NUH and NTU co-develop Master And Slave Transluminal Endoscopic Robot (MASTER), a robotics-enhanced endosurgical system that enables the scarless removal of stomach tumors through the patient's mouth.

  • ​NUH develops a three-minute tool to assess patients’ nutritional needs.

  • ​NUH performs a successful living donor transplantation, overcoming two medical hurdles involving blood group Incompatibility and Cross Match Positive.

  • ​NUH initiates a surgical technique that leaves virtually no scar, and results in less post-surgical pain for patients. The technique involves making a small incision of just 2cm around the naval area for abdominal surgeries such as gall stones, stomach tumors, inflamed appendices and hernias. A port, through which a camera and other surgical tools are inserted, goes through the small incision for surgery to be carried out.

  • ​NUH launches a simulated laboratory for critical care training on 26 May. For realistic training, the 100-sq ft laboratory consists of an HD room and an ICU room, both of which are replicas of the actual set-up. It also includes a seminar room with live-feed facilities for practical training classes which allow nurses to practise their acquired skills in a simulated environment before attending to patients.

  • ​NUH signs an MoU with the Health Promotion Board to implement the NUH Inpatient Education on Chronic Diseases, which aims to integrate self-management of chronic diseases into the existing clinical management of inpatients.

  • ​In January, NUH carries out Hip Resurfacing procedure. The technique of ‘Hip Resurfacing’ involves removing a small portion of damaged cartilage in hip joints with a metal surface. In particular, it benefits younger patients who have damaged hip joints requiring surgery, as it allows surgeons to relieve pain while avoiding the need for a conventional hip replacement.

This medical breakthrough has garnered two prestigious awards - the 7th Asian Innovation Award (Gold) as well as the IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award 2004.

  • ​NUH’s computerised Patient Support System (CPSS) wins the prestigious Asian Hospital Management Awards 2003 (Information Technology Category). The CPSS is a patient-centered initiative that allows our doctors and medical staff quick access to patients' records from all departments in the hospital, 24 hours a day. It includes features that enhance patient safety as well. 

  • ​Dr Allen Yeoh and his research team from the Children's Medical Institute win an Asian Innovation Award (Gold) in October for their work in developing a diagnostic kit to detect Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in children more accurately. 

  • ​Physician-scientists from NUH and NUS form a multi-disciplinary consortium that aims to make Singapore a global hub for the discovery and development of botanical/herbal drugs, compounds and medicines of pharmaceutical quality. The consortium successfully obtains a Planning Grant of US$250,000, in October, from the US National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a component of the US National Institutes of Health.

  • ​NUH enters into joint partnership with Johns Hopkins to form the Johns Hopkins - NUH International Medical Centre. The Centre is officially opened by Dr Tony Tan, Deputy Prime Minister, on 6 October 2000. 

1999

  • The Cancer Therapeutics Research Group (CTRG) received a boost to its programme in research in the field of Oncology when it was joined by the world renowned Johns Hopkins Singapore facility. New developments for CTRG in 1999 included seven new clinical trials and four clinical research studies in mesothelioma, small-cell lung, gastric, oesophagal, colorectal, liver, and head and neck cancers.
  • The NUH Liver Transplant Team performed its 50th liver transplant on a 21-month-old baby girl. To commemorate the milestone, the team launched a newsletter, "Liver-Link", which aims to educate, as well as provide advice and support to patients and their families.

1998

  • An MoU is signed on 20 January with Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Economic Development Board, National University of Singapore, NUH and National Science & Technology Board to set up a joint venture healthcare company, Johns Hopkins Singapore.
  • A patient under the Liver Transplant Programme becomes the world's first living liver donor with Von Willebrand's disease (a disease of the clotting system).

1997

  • The NUH Liver Transplant Team performs ‘split liver’ transplant.
  • NUH cardiothoracic surgeons perform open heart surgery on a ‘beating heart’.
  • I-CARE inpatient module completely implemented, effectively moving the Hospital away from mainframe computing to a more cost-effective and integrated open system.
  • Merit Award by the American Society of Clinical Oncology for his research on gene therapy: Dr Kong Hwai Loong (Department of Medical Oncology)
  • NUH participates in 5-year multicentre START (Inhaled Steroid Treatment As Regular Therapy in Early Asthma) study involving 7000 patients from USA, Europe and Asia.
  • Dr Chong Yap Seng from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology is awarded the Young Investigator Award by the Australian and New Zealand Colleges of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for his research paper on the alternative use of misoprostol for post-partum bleeding.
  • Researchers from the Department of Orthopaedic surgery find success in the use of cultured chondrocytes and mesenchymal stem cells to repair growth plate defects.
  • The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology launches its inaugural Master's Degree Course in Clinical Embryology.
  • NUH receives Singapore Quality Class Accreditation.

1996

  • The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology reports births of two sets of twins from frozen embryo donations.
  • The first phase of I-CARE, a new, in-house developed computerised system designed to support the Hospital's patient-centre healthcare delivery practice, is introduced in March.
  • NUH performs living-related liver transplant successfully in June. Eighteen-month-old Teo Wen Rui received a liver graft from his mother, Madam Poh Siew Kuan.
  • Kent Ridge Wing, NUH's new extension building, opens its doors to the public on 9 September.
  • The Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery Department performs cross-hand transplantation in September.
  • A refined technique pioneered by the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology enables a woman, who had eight failed (conventional) IVF attempts, to conceive and give birth to a healthy baby girl. It marks the first time that a zona-free blastocyst has been implanted in a woman on Day 5 of fertilisation.

1995

  • NUH performs Paediatric Cadaveric Transplant in January.
  • NUH conducts Allergy Testing to Local Pollen, Ferns and Fungal Spores, in January.

  • NUH publishes report on the use of University of Wisconsin Cold Storage solution in tissue preservation in major limb replantation in March.
  • NUH performs Digital Replantation Surgery under Local Anaesthesia  in July.

  • ​NUH performs liver transplant using a reduced graft.

  • NUH performs Purified Stem Cell Rescue in August.

  • The Department of Laboratory Medicine (third apart from Japan in the Asia Pacific region) receives full accreditation from the College of American Pathologists in September.
  • NUH performs Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery in November.

1994

  • BG George Yeo visits NUH in February as part of  amiliarization tour of hospitals in his capacity as the new Minister for Health.

1993

  • Hospital expansion Phase III gets off ground with the commencement of sub-structural works in October. 
  • NUH utilises a High Resolution Image Net System for on the spot fluorescein and indocyanine-green angiography, and sets the standard for Ocular Imaging in South-East Asia, in December.

1991

  • In April, NUH integrates the inpatient, outpatient and emergency modules of the Patient Care System (PCS).

  • NUH delivers successful birth of twins using Co-culture in April.
  • Coma Arousal Programme for coma patients suffering from head injuries is introduced in June, the first such defined programme available at local hospitals. 


1990

  • In March, doctors in the Department of Ophthalmology develop the software programme for colour vision testing  - a fully automated Farnsworth 100 hue test.
  • Doctors at the Cardiac Department successfully treat a patient with blocked arteries using a novel non-surgical procedure called Atherectomy in May. 
  • NUH successfully performs liver transplant in September.

1989

  • Baby conceived through the MIST (Micro-Insemination Sperm Transfer) is born at NUH in April.

1988

  • In March, NUH establishes an Orthopaedic Diagnostic Centre (ODC) under the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.


  • NUH opens ambulatory care facility for cancer patients, the Oncology Centre, in June.
  • First NUH-NUHEU Collective Agreement Signing Ceremony, in November, is witnessed by then Second Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), Mr Ong Teng Cheong and Dr Kwa Soon Bee, then Chairman, NUH.

1987

  • In January, the Central Testing Unit is set up, establishing a new concept in hospital management.

1986

  • Officially inauguration of NUH in June by Mr Goh Chok Tong, then First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence.
  • NUH carries out cardiac catheterisation at the newly-opened Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory in October.
  • The latest generation Lithotripter is installed; Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy is successfully performed in December.
  • NUH successfully performs open-heart surgery in December.

  • NUH successfully uses frozen embryos in December.

1985

  • NUH opens its doors to the public on 24 June 1985 with 180 employees, serving 56 outpatients and four inpatients on its first day.
