The Department of Surgery leverages on technology to provide clinical quality to our patients. We invest in initiatives such as the Initiative for Research & Innovation in Surgery (IRIS) and the Medical Engineering Research and Commercialisation Initiative (M.E.R.C.I.) to commercialise medical technological innovations. Such innovations include performing Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) as a new cure for Achalasia patients for the first time in Singapore in 2015 and NUH being the first Southeast Asian hospital to offer the Transperineal Prostate Biopsy with an almost zero risk of infection in 2018.
Lastly, we believe in the importance of educating our undergraduate students and post-graduate surgical trainees in the optimal management of surgical patients. In 2019, some of our specialists were recognised for their efforts through various teaching awards.
