The Occuptional Therapy Section in NUH Department of Rehabilitation is dedicated to fostering and maintaining an individual’s ability, across all life stages and health conditions, to engage in tasks and roles that are meaningful to them. Our Section comprises more than 60 highly-trained therapists with a wide variety of skill sets to meet the needs of all NUH patients, both inpatient and in the community.
Within the occupational therapy section of NUH, our specialised work areas include:
Our occupational therapists strive to deliver holistic care to our patients and value close collaboration with the medical team and other allied health professionals. We are part of various multidisciplinary team clinics such as the Neuromuscular Clinic (both adult and paediatric) and the Falls Clinic for the geriatric population.
We also partner with other allied health colleagues to deliver holistic care. For example, we work together with speech therapists for a feeding clinic for children with feeding difficulties, and we work with physiotherapists at the Youth Lifestyle Change clinic to provide weight management services.
Our section is committed to the advancement and development of the profession in Singapore and beyond. Our staff hold positions in the Singapore Association of Occupational Therapy (SAOT) and consult with the Ministry of Health on policy work. Our hand occupational therapists also regularly go on overseas medical trips with the hand surgeons to countries like the UAE and Cambodia to train the local therapists in managing rehabilitation after complex reconstructive surgeries.
In line with NUH’s role as a teaching hospital in Singapore, our section also prioritises the education and development of the next generation of occupational therapists. Our team of acclaimed clinical educators accept students in year-round clinical placements and our clinicians support student research through thesis mentoring. Additionally, we have staff who hold teaching positions at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). We also extend outreach work to the younger generations and regularly conduct career talks at secondary and post-secondary schools.
Our clinicians are actively involved in quality research projects and have obtained grants from organisations like the National Medical Research Council and NUHS-Faculty of Arts and Social Science research collaboration to conduct research in NUH.
