The Division of Adult Reconstruction & Joint Replacement Surgery provides specialized care for adult hip and knee conditions, with a focus on osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, cartilage damage/chondral injuries, chondromalacia, meniscal and ligament-related pathology contributing to joint dysfunction, deformity and functional impairment of the lower limb.
Osteoarthritis of both the hip and the knee is one of the commonest conditions treated. Management is individualised and may include:
- Physiotherapy
- Weight optimization
- Analgesia
- Selected injections including steroids, viscosupplementation (lubrication gel), and biologics including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Autologous Protein Solution (APS)
When symptoms persist despite conservative treatment, surgical options may be considered, including:
- Partial or total knee replacement
- Total hip replacement
- Revision arthroplasty for previous joint replacement
- Arthroscopic surgery including cartilage and meniscus repair
Treatment may also incorporate:
- Advanced Robotic-assisted surgery
- Minimally invasive approaches such as the Direct Anterior Approach to the hip
- Same-day / short-stay surgery pathways
for suitable patients to support precision, safety, enhanced recovery and improved function.
The Division comprises sub-specialised Orthopaedic Surgeons many of whom are fellowship-trained in Adult Reconstruction surgery, allowing them to provide cutting-edge, evidence-based and value-driven care for the above spectrum of conditions.
