Paediatric Training

The Phase III paediatric posting is an eight-week program that includes:

• A one-day orientation and education on the fundamentals of paediatrics
• Centralised didactic interactive sessions, typically in weeks two and six

• Approximately for weeks at NUH and four weeks at KKH, providing comprehensive exposure to paediatrics
• A module on neonatology

The goals of this posting are to help the students:

• Acquire medical knowledge

• Assessing growth and development in babies, children and adolescents
• Providing health maintenance and disease prevention
• Conducting history-taking and physical examinations
• Developing clinical reasoning for diagnoses and differential diagnoses
• Identifying acutely ill patients or who those requiring referral to paediatricians or tertiary care centres
• Investigating and managing common paediatric conditions
• Understanding common medical drugs, their interactions and side effects
• Acquiring and discussing practical skills for managing common paediatric conditions
• Develop interpersonal and communication skills with patients, families and healthcare teams

The Phase V paediatric posting is a three-week program, building upon the eight weeks of paediatrics training completed in Phase III. 

Objectives

The primary goal of the Phase V training is to equip undergraduates with the core competencies expected of a first-year Postgraduate (PGY1). 

By the end of this posting, students will be able to: 

• Recognise normal growth and development in babies, children and adolescents
• Assess growth and development
• Provide health maintenance for babies, children and adolescents
• Approach core clinical problems and formulate reasonable diagnoses and differential diagnosis using information obtained through history-taking, physical examination and investigations
• Exhibit clinical reasoning and decision-making skills
• Manage common core paediatric conditions/diagnoses
• Triage patients effectively
• Identify acutely ill patients and provide basic life support, escalate care as necessary
• Perform core practical skills competently
• Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and healthcare teams
• Demonstrate professionalism
• Engage in self-practice-based learning and improvement
• Function effectively within a healthcare team and system

• Self-evaluation via a formative test at the start of the posting 
• Student Internship Program, integrating students with an inpatient team 
• Bedside tutorials

This one-year fellowship is tailored for fellows-in-training from the ASEAN region, with a preference for applicants with experience in the field. Candidates must hold qualifications that are registrable with the Singapore Medical Council and have the support of a host institution in their home country.

Designed for advanced trainees in paediatric haematology-oncology, this one-year clinical fellowship focuses on paediatric blood/marrow transplant. Candidates must hold qualifications that are registrable with the Singapore Medical Council and have the support of a host institution in their home country.

Our centre is a designated training facility for the two-year 'Diploma in Paediatric Cancer Care' offered by the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Targeted at registered nurses with experience in paediatric oncology, our Paediatric Oncology Nursing Course imparts specialised knowledge and skills required for delivering high-quality care to paediatric oncology patients.

The Department of Paediatric Surgery at NUH offers the following training opportunities: 

Advanced Surgical Training

A three-year training programme for those who have completed and exited from a General Surgery Residency Programme (ACGME-I).

Paediatric Surgery Surgery-in-General

This six-year Paediatric Surgery (PS) Surgery-in-General (SIG) training programme includes various rotations as outlined below.

SIG R1

Rotation: General Surgery*
Duration: 12 Months

SIG R2 & PS R3

Rotation: PS-specific electives
Duration: 3 + 3 months for any of the elective rotations (choose 2 of the 3 options)

• Emergency Medicine or Children's Emergency
• Anaesthesia or Paediatric Anaesthesia
• Paediatric Medicine
  

Rotation: Urology
Duration: 6 months

Rotation: Thoracic
Duration: 6 months

Rotation: General Surgery*
Duration: 6 months

*General Surgery includes sub-specialties recognised by the Singapore Accreditation Board as general surgery (i.e. Breast, Hepatopancreatobiliary, Upper GI, Vascular, Colorectal, Trauma, Head & Neck Surgery)

PS R4, R5 & R6

Core training in Paediatric Surgery with elective and emergency ward, clinic, and operating theatre experience.

This is a 12-month paid clinical fellowship in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at NUH, offering both basic and advanced training in Paediatric Critical Care. Outstanding basic trainees may be considered for an additional 12-month advanced training. Candidates must have qualifications registrable with the Singapore Medical Council.
