Pre-implantation Genetics Laboratory (PGD)
2026/03/30
The Pre‑implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) Centre performs genetic tests on embryos at the single‑cell level. This helps identify whether embryos are genetically or chromosomally normal before they are transferred during IVF. This process allows couples to select embryos that are unaffected by known inherited or chromosomal conditions.
The PGD Centre provides three main types of tests:
1. PGT‑M (Pre‑implantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders)
For couples at risk of passing on a known hereditary condition. Embryos are checked for the specific gene variant(s) that cause severe or life‑limiting diseases.
2. PGT‑SR (Pre‑implantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements)
For couples where one partner carries a chromosomal rearrangement. Although carriers are usually healthy, embryo development can be affected. Embryos are tested for missing or extra chromosomal material that could lead to:
- Implantation failure
- Miscarriage
- Stillbirth
- Babies born with serious abnormalities
3. PGT‑A (Pre‑implantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy)
Offered to couples who meet at least one of the criteria below:
- The woman is 35 years or older
- The woman has had two or more failed embryo transfers
- The woman has had two or more miscarriages
- The woman has had two or more aneuploid embryos or fetuses
PGT‑A checks embryos for whole or partial chromosome losses or gains that may affect implantation and pregnancy outcomes.
