Biosketch

Emeritus Professor Low Poh Sim is currently an Emeritus Consultant in the Division of Paediatric Neurology in NUH. She is also a Emeritus Professor in the Department of Paediatrics, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. She graduated from the University of Singapore in 1974 and subsequently attained higher academic qualifications in the Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Doctor of Medicine from the NUS.

E/Prof Low received her postgraduate training in Paediatric Neurology at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, United Kingdom and the Boston Children's Hospital, USA. She has been fully registered with the Singapore Medical Council since 1975 and has been on the Specialist Register for Paediatric Medicine, Singapore since 1982. In 1996, she obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. She was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, United Kingdom as well as the Royal College of Physicians in 1999.

E/Prof Low has been practising as a paediatrician since 1982 and a Senior Consultant since 1993. Her special interests are in childhood epilepsy, learning and developmental problems in children as well as neuromuscular disorders of childhood. She is also actively involved in the teaching, training and assessment of medical undergraduates and postgraduate paediatric doctors.

  • 2001 – 2003: Refining the molecular diagnostics for routine screening in Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy through analysis of protein truncating mutations.

  • 3 years: Molecular heterogeneity of DMD, haemophilia and other X-linked genes in 10 Asian populations for clinical applications in genetic diagnosis
  • 5 years: Genetic analysis of Duchenne's muscular dystrophy patients
