Biosketch

Associate Professor Gabriel Liu has received his Medical and Master degrees from the University College Dublin, Ireland, and completed advanced surgical training in Orthopaedic in Singapore.  He completed the fellowships below:
  • Degenerative spine surgery fellowship at University Hospital in Basel, Switzerland
  • Complex cervical spine, scoliosis and adult deformity surgery fellowship at Washington University in St, Louis, USA
  • Minimally invasive spine microsurgery fellowship in University College of San Francisco, USA
A/Prof. Gabriel Liu, with more than 20 years post-fellowships spine practice, is recognised as one of the leading clinical and academic figures in the spine community, locally and internationally. Patients with complex spine conditions have come to see him from overseas to be treated Singapore.

He has also served and has been the Scientific Chairman of over 30 programs and invited as faculties of over 120 international / local spine conferences.  He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and spine book chapters.

A/Prof. Gabriel Liu is committed to promote education excellence in medicine, receiving multiple awards including the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award (ATEA), NUH Great Teacher Award and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards.

In addition, A/Prof Gabriel Liu treated conditions range from spinal degeneration, spine fracture, spinal metastasis, congenital deformity of the spine and application of enabling technology including spinal navigation and robotics.

Having designed, developed, and published spinal surgical techniques on:
  • Motion preserving C3 dome, C7 reversed dome hybrid open door laminoplasty to reduced traditional laminoplasty complication for the treatment of cervical myelopathy. 
  • Free hand C1 screws insertion technique for C1 and C2 cervical deformity.
  • Subcrestal iliac screws fixation technique for spinal deformity correction.
  • Single stage posterior pediculectomy and trough cut technique for retropulsed bursted spine fracture fragment reduction and fracture stabilization.
