Mitigating the urban heat island impact

We implement effective heat mitigation measures to improve thermal comfort on the NUH campus:

Cool paint on a roof in NUH

Installing green mats over walkways

Applying cool paint on metal roofs of key buildings

We apply a form of specialised coating that reflects the sun and reduces heat absorption, on metal roofs of our buildings.

This lowers average ambient temperatures by over 20°C.

Installing mats with plants (green mats) over walkways

We install green mats over the sheltered walkway in selected buildings to cool the air.

This reduces temperatures by approximately 8°C (approximately 4°C cooler than traditional roofs) for around 11 hours daily.

Creating community gardens across the hospital

We have community gardens that engage patients, volunteers, and staff in gardening, fostering a stronger sense of community and environmental stewardship.

This contributes to cooling through increased vegetation cover.
