Dr. Sundeep Punamiya is a Senior Consultant at the National University Hospital with over 30 years of experience in interventional radiology. He completed his medical and specialist training in Mumbai, India, and has since dedicated his career to advancing minimally invasive procedures that offer patients safer and more effective treatment options.
Dr. Punamiya has held leadership roles in interventional radiology in both India and Singapore, including as Head of Interventional Radiology at Bombay Hospital (1999–2007) and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (2011–2023). His main area of clinical expertise lies in hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal interventions, particularly in treating conditions such as portal hypertension, Budd-Chiari syndrome, biliary disorders, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
A pioneer in the field, Dr. Punamiya was among the first in Asia to perform the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure, and he introduced several advanced interventional techniques to Singapore, including prostate artery embolisation, thoracic duct embolisation, endobiliary ablation, percutaneous cholangioscopy, stent-in-stent biliary stenting, and complex portosystemic shunts.
He is an internationally recognised speaker and educator, having delivered over 250 lectures, workshops, and live case demonstrations globally. His academic contributions include over 60 scientific publications and book chapters, and he serves on the editorial boards of Gastrointestinal Interventions and the Journal of Clinical Interventional Radiology.
Dr. Punamiya is deeply committed to education and has led fellowship training programs in interventional radiology for more than two decades. Many of his trainees now practice around the world as accomplished interventional radiologists.
He is an active member of several professional societies and has held leadership roles in the Singapore Radiological Society and the Indian Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field, he was honoured with the FSIR award by the Society of Interventional Radiology in Atlanta in 2015.
