Dr Joy Yap is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the National University Hospital (NUH), with subspecialty expertise in uveitis, medical retina and neuro-ophthalmology. She provides comprehensive, evidence-based care for patients with complex ocular inflammatory diseases, retinal disorders and neuro-ophthalmic conditions.

Dr Yap graduated with her undergraduate medical degree from the University of Leicester and obtained a Master's degree in Clinical Vision Science from the University of Ulster. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), having completed higher specialist training in the United Kingdom. Her clinical expertise lies in the management of sight-threatening inflammatory eye disease, utilising immunosuppressive agents and biologic therapies delivered within a multidisciplinary framework to ensure safety and optimal outcomes.

Prior to joining NUH, Dr Yap served as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She previously held a consultant post at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where she led the Uveitis Service and developed streamlined care pathways for patients with complex inflammatory eye disease. She worked closely with rheumatology and other specialties to facilitate safe initiation and monitoring of immunosuppressive and biologic therapies, reducing reliance on long-term corticosteroids and improving access to advanced treatments.

Dr Yap has a strong interest in clinical research, particularly in ocular inflammation and inflammatory retinal disease. She was Principal Investigator for the NIHR-sponsored ASTUTE trial evaluating adalimumab in autoimmune uveitis and successfully exceeded recruitment targets. Her work has been recognised with institutional research awards, and she has been actively involved in publications and presentations at regional and international conferences.

An experienced educator, Dr Yap has held formal teaching and supervisory roles and completed recognised medical education training programmes. She has organised regional uveitis forums and postgraduate teaching initiatives, and is committed to mentoring trainees and advancing ophthalmic education. She aims to engage her patients to provide evidence-based yet individualised therapy in her daily clinical duties.

Dr Yap remains dedicated to advancing clinical excellence, research and education, and to delivering holistic, collaborative care for patients at NUH.
