Biosketch

Dr Benjamin Tan underwent his medical training at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine National University of Singapore (NUS), where he graduated in 2013 on the Dean's List. For his achievements in medical school, he was awarded the prestigious Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-Round Achievement by the Ministry of Education, Singapore. Dr Tan then underwent his postgraduate residency training in the National University Health System (NUHS). He previously served as Chief Resident of the University Medicine Cluster at NUHS. He attained his Master of Clinical Investigation degree from the NUS, supported by a Ministry of Health Healthcare Research Scholarship. He subsequently obtained specialist accreditation in Neurology in 2021.

From 2024-2025, Dr Tan pursued a research fellowship under the mentorship of Dr Jonathan Rosand and Dr Christopher D Anderson at the Center of Genomic Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, USA and Harvard Medical School, USA. Supported by a NMRC Research Training Fellowship, he gained expertise in population genetics and computational biology approaches for stroke and cerebrovascular disease. 

Dr Tan has been active in medical education and clinical research. In 2025, he was awarded the NUS Medicine Annual Teaching Excellence Award (Individual). He has published more than 200 papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Dr Tan is a Joint Principal Investigator at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), A*STAR and the Neurology Specialty Editor of the Singapore Medical Journal. He is also a Committee Member of the New Scientific Initiatives Taskforce, Council on Stroke at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

Currently, Dr Tan's clinical and research interests span young stroke, cerebrovascular disease genetics, heart-brain interactions and brain health.
