Biosketch

A/Prof Ray Manotosh is a Senior Consultant and Deputy Head in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National University Hospital (NUH). He specialises in cornea, external eye diseases, cataract, contact lens and refractive surgery, and heads the Cornea & Refractive Surgery division in the Department.

Concurrently, he is Associate Professor and Director of Education at the Department of Ophthalmology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). He plays several key roles in postgraduate medical education, including Chief Examiner for the National Exit Examination (Ophthalmology), Member of the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) for Ophthalmology, and Member of the MMed (Ophthalmology) Examination Committee. In addition, he serves as Treasurer of the Asia Pacific Trauma Society.

A/Prof Ray completed his basic surgical training (MD) at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India, in 1997. He subsequently underwent advanced surgical training in Cornea and External Eye Diseases at AIIMS and later obtained his Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (UK).

He has co-authored three ophthalmology textbooks. One of them, "Essentials of Ophthalmology: For Medical School and Beyond," was nominated amongst the best ophthalmology textbooks in the field. In addition, he has contributed more than 25 chapters to ophthalmology textbooks and authored over 40 research papers in peer-reviewed journals.

In recognition of his contributions to medical education, A/Prof Ray has received several teaching awards, including the National Healthcare Group Teaching Excellence Award (2006), the NUHS Teaching Excellence Award (2024), and the Eye & Vision Health Award for Distinguished Service (2025).
