Dear Reader,
At NUH, we are committed to delivering the best possible care to all our patients.
We manage approximately 1,300 severe and critical trauma causes annually. In trauma care, every minute counts. This year, we set up the National University Centre for Trauma to provide holistic care and support for trauma survivors, helping them regain confidence in all aspects of life as they journey through recovery.
Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers constitute one-third of male cancer cases and about one-fifth of female cases in Singapore. To combat the condition, we have established the National University Centre for Digestive Health, which focuses on developing new technologies to enhance the early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of GI diseases.
Stroke cases in Singapore have surged 57 percent over the past decade. Our Hyper Acute Stroke Endovascular (HASTEN-NUH) Team ensures stroke patients receive timely intervention around the clock, boosting their chances of recovery and lowering the risk of recurrence. This focus on improving stroke outcomes earned us the 2024 World Stroke Organisation Angels Award (Platinum).
We now offer gastric cancer patients a better chance at survival through a novel spray-based approach to administering chemotherapy for the condition, which is one of the top 10 causes of cancer-related deaths in Singapore.
Innovation continues to shape how we deliver personalised, patient-centric care. We harnessed artificial intelligence (AI) to make breast cancer screening more accurate and comfortable, which in turn facilitates earlier detection and timely treatment — an important development as breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Singapore. Our doctors have also used AI to generate patient information videos that are more accessible and engaging for patients, which eases their concerns and boosts their confidence before undergoing surgery.
We expanded our treatment options such as CAR T-cell therapy for leukaemia patients who have exhausted all potentially curative options. The therapy, which redirects the body’s immune defences to accurately identify and eliminate cancer cells, has given our patients a chance at remission without severe side effects.
We thank you for supporting EnvisioningHealth—Changing Lives One Idea at a Time, and look forward to sharing more updates with you in the coming year.
