Dr Alvin Wong is a senior consultant in the Dept of Haematology Oncology at the National University Hospital. He leads the medical oncology Genitourinary Cancers team at the National University Cancer Institute, and is actively involved in specialty training, clinical research and patient care.
His recent clinical trial activity includes participation in the global phase III studies in kidney (COSMIC 313, LITESPARK 022), urothelial (EV 302, TROPIC 04), and prostate (PSMAddition) cancers. He also contributed to phase I trials developing novel therapeutics in prostate (Bispecific T cell Engager: AMG 160) and kidney (HIF 2-alpha inhibitor: DFF332) cancers.
He helped develop the Immunotherapy Toxicities (IRTOX) team in NUH, involving cross-specialty collaborations in clinical care and education, and the development of new niche sub-specialties in onco-cardiology and onco-nephrology. He led the NCIS ‘de-Tox’ series of educational webinars.
He enjoys having an eye for what others might miss and goes ‘back to basics’ in clinical acumen to complement modern hi-tech advances. For example, the identification of differential clonal behaviour of different metastatic sites led to his contribution to a paper in Nature/EMBO. He was arguably the first in Singapore to treat and publish a case of life saving chemotherapy given in a pregnant lady with breast cancer.
