Biosketch

Dr Lennard Thean is the Head of Ophthalmology and a Senior Consultant practising in Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) and Jurong Medical Centre (JMC), members of the National University Health System (NUHS).

Prior to joining NTFGH and JMC in 2014, Dr Thean was the Clinical Director of Ophthalmology at National University Hospital (NUH) since 2002. He was also the Head of Cataract, Lasik & Refractive Surgery and Uveitis at NUH from 2011. At NUH, he was the principal lead in in the design of the NUH Eye Clinic @ Biopolis and NUHS Medical Centre’s eye clinic. At NTFGH, he was the principal lead in the design of the hospital’s eye clinic.

A medical graduate from the United Kingdom, Dr Thean underwent three ophthalmology fellowships in refractive surgery, uveitis and glaucoma. His key interests are in advanced cataract surgery and refractive surgery. His sub-specialties also include uveitis and glaucoma.

Dr Thean was a pioneer in performing Femtosecond Lasik using the Zeiss platform of Visumax and Mel 80 laser, and in the use of the Catalys Femtosecond laser to perform Femtosecond Laser assisted cataract surgery. He has also played a significant role in the testing of the Liquid Optic Interface-12 for use with the Catalys laser, and is a pioneer in using it on patients clinically. This interface has become the standard for the majority of patients undergoing Catalys Femtosecond Laser-assisted cataract surgery in Singapore. At NTFGH and JMC, he implemented the use of the Zeiss Callisto for use in computer image guided cataract surgery, especially for the use of astigmatism lenses and multi-focal lenses for cataract surgery. Dr Thean has also published in international journals on ophthalmology.

Dr Thean chairs the Medical Device Committee and is a member of the Operating Theatre Committee in NTFGH. At the national level, he is part of the Ministry of Health’s workgroup to review the evaluation and financing of screening and treatment modalities as well as the Ministry of Health’s Health Technology Advisory Committee (HTAC). Since 2008, he has been the Carl Zeiss Regional Advisor (Asia) for LASIK.
