Biosketch

Dr Foong Theng Wai is dually accredited in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia and holds concurrent positions as a consultant in both the Departments of Anaesthesia and Cardiothoracic Surgery at National University Hospital. Her subspecialty interests are anaesthesia for thoracic surgery, intensive care medicine, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Dr Foong attained her MBBS in 2012 and Master of Medicine (Anaesthesiology) in 2016 from the Yong Loo Lin School (YLLSoM) of Medicine at National University of Singapore. She received Specialist Accreditation in Anaesthesiology in 2018 and perioperative transesophageal echocardiography accreditation in 2021. Dr Foong completed a thoracic anaesthesiology fellowship at Toronto General Hospital in 2022 and further sub-specialty training in Intensive Care Medicine in 2023. She currently leads the thoracic anaesthesia service in NUH. 

Administratively, Dr Foong was an ex-co member of the Singapore Society of Anesthesiologists from 2019-2021. She also co-chaired the National Airway Program Singapore and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) instructor. Her research interest includes airway device innovation involving artificial intelligence. She has obtained several grants including the National University Health System Innovation grant and Third Engineering Pitch-for-Fund grant for her innovation projects. Towards her goal of nurturing the next generation, she is a faculty of the NUHS Anaesthesia Residency program and a clinical examiner at the YLLSoM. 

Dr Foong constantly looks to improve her skills and knowledge. She is motivated by the opportunity to care for, and make a difference in, her patient’s and their families’ lives. This has driven her to pursue dual fellowships and be holistically involved throughout the perioperative period. Practicing at an academic institution allows her to stay on the forefront of clinical medicine, and work in a multidisciplinary team to provide high standards of patient-centric care.
