Occupational Therapy:

 

 

Paediatrics

  • Supporting children with congenital and developmental conditions to cope and develop necessary skills for participation in daily activities, such as performing self-care activities, learning in school and playing with peers.
  • Conducting parenting workshops to increase understanding in topics of interest such as “sensory integration” and “floortime”
  • Providing consultations to schools to enhance learning in the classroom

Hand Therapy

  • Rehabilitating patients with upper limb injuries (e.g. fractures, nerve compressions, etc) to increase their functional use of their hands

Specialised Programmes

Lymphoedema Management
Lymphoedema is a persistent swelling usually affecting an arm, leg or any part of the body. Our physiotherapists are Vodder Certified Therapists who are highly qualified in the management of this condition. Physiotherapy helps to reduce swelling as much as possible, thereby enabling the patient to resume a lifestyle as desired. The treatment includes manual lymph drainage, prescription of compression bandaging or pressure garments and a home maintenance programme.

Vestibular/ Balance Rehabilitation
Vestibular rehabilitation is conducted by our physiotherapists who are trained in treating balance disorders which arise from dysfunction of the ears. Our therapists prescribe exercises to help restore the optimum vestibular function as well as strengthening, proprioception and balance retraining to maximise an individual's balance and facilitate his/her return to work or community.

Office/ workplace ergonomic assessments
Our ergonomic evaluation includes job task analyses at the workplace to improve the ergonomic environment for the worker. This service is available to anyone who would like to have an ergonomic assessment, including external companies. It is performed by our physiotherapist who is a certified ergonomics clinical specialist. We also conduct educational talks in this topic.

Weight Management: Our physiotherapists will provide weight management advice and education for individuals with BMI >30 and those who are preparing for bariatric surgery. Exercise is paramount for an effective weight loss programme and our therapists will be able to plan and advise clients on safe and effective exercises.

Pelvic Floor Exercise Class: This is an exercise class that is targeted for all women with incontinence problems designed to teach them strategies to incorporate their pelvic floor muscles with everyday activities like walking, sitting and even slow jogging. In addition, the class also includes flexibility, core-stability and relaxation exercises which helps to promote one's well-being.

Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation: The Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme is one of the oldest and most established programmes targeting clients after heart/lung surgery and interventions with the primary aim to help the clients achieve their optimal health status both physically and psychologically. This programme also includes education, and advises on the control of body weight, diet and stress, with the aim of lifestyle modification to reduce the risk of heart and lung disease.

Back Exercise Class (Back, neck and shoulder strengthening class): This programme is targeted at patients with low back pain and it focuses on cardiovascular fitness and Pilates mat work to strengthen the transversus abdominus muscle. The transversus abdominus muscle has been shown in research to alleviate low back pain by supporting the back and by promoting general well being.

Tai Chi classes: Our physiotherapists conduct Tai Chi classes for Arthritis, Osteoporosis and Diabetic patients. This form of Tai Chi has been modified to be safe and has been scientifically proven to improve balance, muscle strength and coordination. All our instructors are certified by Dr Paul Lam, who introduced this internationally recognised exercise programme.

Biomechanical Assessment and Gait Analysis

Our podiatrists can assess and investigate biomechanical causes for:

  • Painful lower limb conditions

Orthoses and Insoles are devices designed to support the foot during walking. Our Podiatrists are trained in the prescription and fabrication of insoles and orthoses. These devices can provide support or cushioning for the feet to treat a variety of conditions.

Skin and Nail Problems: Assessment and treatment of common skin and nail conditions are performed by our podiatrists. This includes management of ingrown toenails, warts, corns and callosities.

Paediatric Foot Conditions: Assessment and management of children's foot conditions is available. This includes flat feet, in-toeing or abnormal gait.

Our podiatrists manage common sports injuries including over-use injuries or sprains. This includes evaluating sports footwear and training programme related to injuries

Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy services in NUH cater for three main groups:

  • Adult swallowing disorders;
  • Adult communication disorders; and
  • Paediatric developmental disorders.

Our outpatient services include:

  • Swallowing Clinic: Speech therapists perform swallowing assessments to determine the nature and extent of the swallowing difficulties before recommending compensatory and /or treatment strategies. Some individuals may require further evaluation using videofluoroscopy and / or fibreoptic endoscopy. Common compensatory strategies used to manage swallowing difficulties include changing the consistency of food and drinks and /or adopting certain postures during swallowing.
  • Adult Communication Clinic: Communication assessments and treatment for the following disorders:
  • Language disorders or aphasia
  • Cognitive-communication disorder
  • Apraxia of Speech (AOS), Dysarthria, Parkinson 's disease 
  • Adult Fluency clinic: Stuttering or stammering can affect an individual's selfconfidence as well as one's social, academic and employment life. We offer treatmentsto help establish fluent speech and bring this into everyday speaking situations

  • Early Language Development Clinic: We assess and provide intervention for
    Language Delay (a.k.a. "Late talking"), enhancing parents' child interaction skills while
    working with the child on one-to-one basis

  • Child Speech Clinic: Our therapists provide assessment and treatment for Articulation
    and Phonological Disorders such as lisps. Therapy takes place in the context of fun and
    games, making therapy thoroughly enjoyable

  • Child Fluency Clinic: Speech therapists engage parents as partners in therapy for
    childhood stuttering

  • School Age Language Clinic: We provide assessments and intervention, using a
    multidisciplinary team approach with psychologists, teachers, paediatricians, parents,
    while working with the child and parent on a one-on-one basis.

Specialised Programmes:

  • Our speech therapists provide continuing education for our colleagues. We conduct dysphagia screening training for our nurses and provide educational talks and workshops for our nursing colleagues in nursing homes
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Clinic: We provide individuals with inadequate speech output. We assess and train these individuals to use communication systems / devices, e.g. picture boards or voice output systems to add to their speech attempts or even to replace speech
  • Talks and training programmes for teachers and other professionals on speech and language development in children
  • Talks and training programmes in the long-term care of patients with swallowing disorders
  • Training programmes for child language development tailored to parents of toddlers who are interested in providing a stimulating environment for language development at home
