4月2日是世界自闭症日。国大医院儿童发展部门主任张尚琪顾问医生受访时指出,自闭症是本地儿童最常见的疾病之一,其他家长急 求助的儿童病症包括过动症和哮喘病等。
她说,自闭症的儿童也能进入主流的教育制度,他们在音乐艺术、数学等方面的表现也很特出。 Read more

An encounter with the frustrated husband of a patient with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) led Dr Reuben Wong to wonder about the burden borne by spouses because of the chronic gut condition. The patient had just left his consultation room when there was a knock on the door. Her husband came inside alone and pleaded with Dr Wong to help his wife get better. "He told me her symptoms were affecting their marital life negatively, that they no longer had a social life and that he was suffering too," said Dr Wong. Read more

Experts are linking irritable bowel syndrome with psychological disorders but needing help for mental issues is often perceived as a stigma by patients.
A 66-year-old housewife suffers from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as well as anxiety and a few other psychological issues. With the help of a gastroenterologist and psychologist, the woman, who wanted to be known only as Madam Theresa, traced the cause of her psychological issues to when she suffered abuse as a child at a boarding school in another country. She had not expected to discover that her bowel condition was probably caused by her psychological issues. Read more

Pain in the groin when standing (Mind Your Body, The Straits Times)


Q:I am a 60-year-old man with pain in the groin whenever I stand still for more than 10 minutes. The pain has been bothering me for nearly two months. The pain radiates from the upper right thigh and I have great difficulty climbing stairs after each numbing attack. The pain disappears when I sit down and rest. I can jog, walk briskly and even do leg presses at the gym without any pain or swelling in the affected area. I consulted a sports medicine specialist but he could not find anything wrong with me. I even went for traditional Chinese medicine massages and acupuncture but there has been no improvement. Please advise. Read more

Painful bowel diseases affect growing number of Asians (TODAY)


Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which used to be common in Western societies, are now becoming more prevalent among Asians, including children, doctors here say. The debilitating conditions belong to a group of chronic diseases known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects the intestines, causing inflammation, ulcers, narrowing and abnormal connections with other parts of the bowel or other organs. Over time, there is an increased risk of cancer of the intestines. Read more

NUH to build Centre for Oral Health (Lianhe Zaobao)


国大医院将兴建口腔卫生中心
新加坡国立大学医院内将兴建一座口腔卫生中心,以应对国人日益增加的口腔健康及人口老龄化需求,新中心预计在2017年完成。
国大牙科学院院长王慧莲昨晚出席新加坡牙科协会75周年晚宴时透露扩充学院的消息。
她受访时说,国大牙科学院校舍分布在国大和国大医院的三座大楼,已经没有扩建的地方。
当新的口腔卫生中心(Centre for OralHealth)建成后,将聚集牙科教学、临床和研究三项功能,让国大牙科系能扩大这三个领的作业,包括照顾更多病人、录取更多学生及展开更多研究等。新中心的面积为2万6000平方公尺。 Read more

睡姿也会影响青光眼,甚至可能使部分青光眼患者病情恶化。

新加坡国立大学医院一组医生针对23名50岁至6 0 多岁青光眼病患展开的研究显示,病人侧睡时脸部肌肉与枕头接触会对眼球施加压力,导致眼压上升。 Read more

辱骂 殴打医护员 至少14人被查办 (联合晚报)


因辱骂或殴打医护人员,至少14人送警查办或被控上庭。
邱德拔医院在过去一年就将12名对医院工作人员动粗的病人或病人家属,交由警方处理。
国大医院也与警方合作,将2名对医护人员动粗或做出威胁的病人家属控上法庭。
国大医院在2010年与2011年,每年有约80起辱骂或殴打医护人员的案子。
中央医院过去两年也发生350起医护人员被辱骂的事件。 Read more
