Financial Support

The NUHkids Fund

The NUHkids Fund is the charity arm of the Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children's Medical Institute (KTP-NUCMI) at the National University Hospital (NUH).

We are a tertiary institution equipped to provide comprehensive and specialised medical and surgical services for newborns, children and adolescents. The conditions treated range from cough and cold to more complex conditions such as kidney and liver disease.

Medical treatment that is essential can be costly. Every year, there are patients who encounter financial difficulties in spite of government healthcare subsidies such as Medisave, MediShield or Medifund schemes and or private insurance. The number of such patients who require financial aid continue to rise yearly.

We believe that no one should forgo treatment because of financial difficulties. As such, the NUHkids Fund (formerly known as CAP Fund) was started in 1990.

Vision

To enable all children and adolescents to achieve good health and well-being regardless of their financial circumstances.

Mission

To help children and adolescents who require financial assistance for their medical treatment.

What does the fund help with?

Managed by NUHS Fund Limited, the NUHkids Fund raises monies for financially disadvantaged children seeking treatment at KTP-NUCMI.

It has been an important source of funding and support for items such as:

  • The purchase of medical equipment (e.g. renal dialysis equipment, oxygen concentrators, home ventilator machines, feeding pumps).
  • The purchase of consumables (e.g. catheters, feeding tubes, test strips).
  • The cost of tests or investigations (e.g. X-Rays, blood tests).
  • The cost of treatment such as medication, rehabilitation, and outpatient subsidised consultation fees.

For the year 2015, the NUHkids Fund approved 90 applications totaling $264,287.77. This has enabled financially needy patients to continue with treatment and alleviate the stress faced by their parents and families.

These are some of the patients who have been helped by the NUHkids Fund:

  1. Matthew* is a 7 year old patient with intellectual disability, epilepsy and deteriorating lung function. He is very dependent as he is not able to move on his own and requires nasogastric tube feeding. He is the youngest among three siblings from a low-income family. The Fund assisted Matthew with $5,800 to buy a home ventilation machine to help support his breathing and lung function.
  2. Sarah* is 8 years old. A few years ago, she was diagnosed with a chronic bladder problem (neurogenic bladder) and is on regular follow-up and treatment. She is required to do Clean Intermittent Catheterisation (CIC) several times a day, so as to prevent kidney infections and preserve her kidney function. She is the elder of two children. Her father is the main breadwinner of the family and earns a low income. Her mother used to work but has quit her job to care for Sarah. Sarah’s family struggles to get by on the father's income. They moved to a smaller flat as they were unable to keep up with mortgage loan payments. Sarah’s family is currently being assisted by the NUHkids Fund for the consumables which she requires for her CIC.
  3. Colin* is an 18 year old patient with epilepsy, intellectual disability and malnutrition. His parents are in their fifties; they have chronic medical conditions and are on follow-up with specialists. They are struggling to cope with Colin's high care needs. Colin’s father was retrenched in 2012 and is now working as a kitchen helper. He earns about $800 to support the family. His mother cannot work as she has to care for Colin. The NUHkids Fund is currently assisting Colin with a sum of $140 per month for the purchase of milk feeds which is essential for his malnourished state.

Who decides on the disbursement of financial aid?

Disbursement of financial aid is done by a committee comprising doctors, nurses and medical social workers.
