Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. There has been recent advances in acute stroke treatment which when instituted early, can be of importance in reducing the burden of this debilitating illness. Understanding the basic mechanisms leading to stroke and the available preventive measures after the acute period are vital as well.
