Yolanda B. Orendain

As a Nurse Manager, I am responsible for the smooth running of a ward so that we can provide good patient care. This includes providing my junior colleagues with the opportunity to learn and develop professionally.

One of my priorities is ensuring that they are able to cope, especially during their first few months in the ward. I hope to build up their competencies and train them to become future leaders in nursing.

NUH is an organisation that believes in developing its people. I have been given many opportunities to excel since I first came to Singapore to work as s nurse. I am now a PR and NUH is like my second home.

What are some of your challenges?

I strive to create a culture of open communication with my colleagues so they are comfortable to approach me when they face challenges at work. Listening to their feedback and suggestions allows me to address their concerns.

One of my priorities is ensuring that the new nurses are able to cope, especially during their first few months in the ward. I hope to build up their competency, help them achieve their full potential and nurture them to become future leaders in nursing.

To me, respect is the most important attitude one has to have. Respect is earned and not given. In order to build a strong foundation of teamwork, one has to earn respect.

What makes you proud of NUH?

NUH has no lack of compassionate people and opportunities. This is an organisation that looks after its staff well, one that allows individuals to develop their potential so that all can excel in what they do, and more importantly, to deliver safe and quality care to patients.
