Liu Shaohua

It is a great joy to see a new life come into the world. As a midwife, I am in the unique position of being able to see the miracle of life happen almost daily. The work can be demanding and stressful, because not every delivery goes according to plan. I see my role as someone who safeguards the well-being of mother and child.

Many first-time mothers are uncertain of what to expect during their pregnancy and labour. I am honoured that I can support a mother through one of the most significant and life-changing milestones in her life. A key trait essential to my role is compassion. It helps me empathise with the mother in labour, encourage her through her pain, alleviate her fear, and witness her joy. What adds to my job satisfaction: an uneventful and safe birth!

What do you do as a midwife?

As a midwife, I care for the unique needs of mothers-to-be and mothers during their pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period. Being a member of the hospital’s Enhanced Midwifery Maternity Care (EMMa) care team,  I also promote the natural aspects of pregnancy and childbirth. I help mothers-to-be cope emotionally and assist them to have successful natural or water birth.

Being a midwife is more than just delivering babies.  I am responsible for providing care and supporting women to make informed choices about their care during their pregnancy and throughout labour.

What would your one superpower be, if you could have one?

It would be to remove labour pain for all women! Labour pain can be an unpleasant experience to women who opt to not have any pain relief As a nurse, I cannot do much to lessen their discomfort without medical intervention.
