There are many factors that can affect the lungs and airways. These
include meconium or blood aspiration (meconium or blood enters the lungs during
birth process), delayed absorption of lung fluids, and lung infection. Conditions
affecting other organ systems, such as malformations of the heart and
intestines and early infection, can also contribute to respiratory diseases.
