About the condition

Thyroid gland

Thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy) is performed for benign goitres, toxic goitres (Graves’ disease) and thyroid cancer.

Multi-disciplinary approach to thyroid cancer managemen involves surgeons, endocrinologists and nuclear medicine physicians working jointly to provide holistic patient care. Overall treatment consists of total thyroidectomy (and neckdissection), radioactive iodine treatment and thyroid hormone suppression.

Endoscopic thyroidectomy is a new minimal access thyroid operation for benign thyroid lumps. Its advantage over the traditional neck surgery is the cosmetic benefit of leaving no scars on the neck.

Parathyroid gland

Parathyroid surgery (parathyroidectomy) is performed for patients with primary, secondary, and tertiary hyperparathyroidism (a condition of excess parathyroid hormone causing elevated serum calcium).

Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy is performed for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who have a localised parathyroid adenoma on nuclear sestamibi scanning. The parathyroid gland is removed through a 2-cm neck incision. The recovery for patients from this surgery is faster and thereby requires a short hospital stay.

Parathyroid cryopreservation facility is provided for patients who require parathyroid autotransplantation in the future.

Adrenal gland

Adrenal surgery (adrenalectomy) is performed for patients with adrenal endocrine diseases – primary hyperaldosteronism ( Conn ’s syndrome), Cushing’s syndrome, pheochromocytoma, non-functioning adrenal tumours, and adrenal cancers.

Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is minimally invasive surgery to remove the adrenal gland. This preferred technique is performed at NUH and gives rise to minimal postoperative pain for patients with a short hospital stay.

Pancreatic endocrine gland

Pancreatic surgery (pancreatectomy) is performed for patients with rare pancreatic endocrine diseases – insulinoma, gastrinoma, somatostatinoma, etc.

Minimally invasive surgery can be performed to remove these tumours.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

At the Thyroid Clinic, we provide comprehensive services for patients with thyroid problems, such as :

  • One-stop facility where patients are given detailed specialist review, thyroid function blood tests, thyroid ultrasound and needle biopsy. Executive packages are offered for comprehensive testing.
  • Short-stay thyroid surgery where the average hospital stay for hemithyroidectomy is one day and total thyroidectomy is two days.
  • Multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of thyroid conditions.
