About the condition

It is the backflow if gastric acid and contents from the stomach into the esophagus. This gastric acid can irritate and cause damage to the esophagus lining.

Signs & Symptoms

Heartburn – an uncomfortable burning sensation behind the breastbone which usually occurs after a meal. It is regurgitation of gastric contents into the mouth. Occasionally, some patients will have chronic cough, asthma, and hoarseness of voices. In severe cases, GERD may cause narrowing of esophagus (gullet) and it may lead to cancer.

Treatment
