The University Spine Centre was set up in June 2008 as a comprehensive one-stop service for patients with spinal disorders. It is tertiary referral centre for various spinal disorders including cervical spine disorders, spinal deformities, spinal tumors, spinal infections, spinal trauma, and degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine. The centre is also performing spine surgeries using the latest technologies, e.g. disc replacement, dynamic stabilisation, and minimally invasive spine surgery.
Our service also looks after non-operative management of spinal conditions, e.g. braces, physiotherapy, and acupuncture.
We have set up a spine registry since 2007 for audit and research purposes, and hope to translate it to better clinical care.
Our currrent set-up consists of five specialists and a team of para-clinical staff.
Spine Navigation
- State-of-the-art Operating Theatre (OT) Suite allowing a three-dimensional intra-operative spinal navigation to maximise patient safety during spinal surgery.
- The system provides a simultaneous, multiplanar CT-scan liked visualisation of patient-specific intra-operative spinal anatomy and allows surgical instruments to be tracked in relation to the displayed anatomy in real time.
- Increases the safety margin of spinal surgery, reduction of surgery time and radiation exposure to the patient.
- The current indications for spine navigation:
1. Complex spinal reconstruction surgery
2. Spinal deformity correction
3. Revision spinal surgery
4. Minimal invasive spine surgery
