Introduction

Our vision "Leading the way in clinical care through excellence in research and education" spells what we do as a Cluster. Comprising 8 Divisions: Endocrinology, Family Medicine, General Medicine (including Dermatology & Geriatrics), Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine, and 2 Departments (Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Psychological Medicine), our clinicians are dedicated to providing excellent and evidence-based care of adult patients suffering from the full spectrum of medical diseases.

As a University-affiliated unit, we are also committed to providing both undergraduate and post-graduate learning and training in a wide range of disciplines and are active in various clinically-related and translational research areas.

In clinical service, the Cluster encourages initiatives that aim to improve clinical outcomes, patient safety, care coordination, and delivery. We are glad to say that we have made inroads in this aspect as various divisions and departments appointed committees and task forces have successfully implemented a variety of patient-related initiatives with desirable outcomes.

In undergraduate teaching, the Education Task Force has streamlined our academic mission of imparting the promising medical students and future generation of doctors with the best of clinical training, learning experience and academic knowledge. Thus far, steady steps have taken place in that direction, with improved teaching scores and more robust evaluation system, and we hope to continue to sustain this momentum. The Cluster believes in and is committed to recruiting and retaining the highest quality staff. As such, it has invested much effort in post-graduate training including those of house officers, medical officers, and registrars.

The consistent popularity of the Cluster as the top choice department for medical officers is a testament of the success of our post-graduate training efforts. The Residency Program, and Talent Management & Academic Development Program have been implemented so as to groom new talent for leadership and provide training, exposure and opportunities in clinical translational research.  In addition, UMC faculty have played a leading role in establishing a new post-graduate residency program for internal medicine trainees.

In the pipeline, we will establish a Research Task Force to fulfill our vision of nurturing and sustaining a vibrant research culture within the Cluster. For the coming years, the Cluster hopes to build on its past successes to continue to be a major catalyst for clinical, translational and basic research within the University and hospital.

On top of providing excellent day to day care to our patients, the Cluster encourages bottom-up initiatives that aim to continuously improve clinical outcomes, patient safety, care coordination & delivery in a sustainable fashion. In believing that teaching & training of our students and staff forms the foundation to better care for our patients, the Cluster has strived to impart the best of core values, academic knowledge, and clinical practice to our medical students. The Cluster has also invested much effort in post-graduate training of house officers, medical officers, and registrars. The consistent popularity of the Cluster as the top-choice department for medical officers is a testament to the success of our post-graduate training efforts.

It is the belief of the Cluster that our strength lies in our staff, who can achieve the best potential through mentorship in a supportive learning environment. Lastly, in order to realize the mission of providing ‘home-grown’ innovations to help advance health and healthcare up the value chain, the Cluster has embarked on building a research vibrant culture, nurturing clinician investigators, developing successful models for translational and clinical research, and identify research focus within the Cluster.

Today, we strive to be an Academic Medical Centre delivering excellent clinical service, medical education and training as well as advancing opportunities for clinical and translational research.
