Overview
The Department of Psychological Medicine provides comprehensive psychiatric management including outpatient, inpatient and day hospital services. It has individualized treatment programmes for the broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders, e.g. depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, anorexia nervosa, dementia, etc. The multidisciplinary team comprises psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social worker and occupational therapist.
The Department is responsible for the teaching of psychiatry to medical students of the National University of Singapore. There is an active postgraduate training programme for residents who intend to specialize in psychiatry or family medicine.
The Department has sought to incorporate clinical research into the clinical service it provides. Over the years, it has accomplished much important work in mental health epidemiology, particularly in geriatric psychiatry and the epidemiology of mental disorders in the Singapore population. We have also embarked upon basic science research investigating the genetics of mental disorders and neurocognition in psychiatric disorders. Collaborative research has been conducted with other NUS Medical Faculty Departments, Woodbridge Hospital/Institute of Mental Health and other external agencies.
