Division Of Rheumatology

The Division presently comprises 3 Consultants, 2 Associate Consultants and a Rheumatology Nurse Clinician.

Our Services:

Outpatient Infusion Centre (OPIC)
The Outpatient Infusion Centre (OPIC) offers convenience to patients who require parenteral therapy. We work with a diverse group of patients with a broad range of medical conditions.

Subspecialty clinics

  • High-risk Obstetric clinic where patients with recurrent pregnancy losses or rheumatic disease evaluated and managed jointly by an obstetrician and rheumatologist
  • Paediatric Rheumatology clinic where children and adolescents with joint pains or possible autoimmune disease are jointly assessed by adult and paediatric rheumatologists.

Interventional Services
There is a dedicated facility which provides outpatient procedural services for:

  • Joint aspiration and injections for diagnosis and the relief of painful and swollen joints
  • Soft tissue injections
  • Viscosupplementation (Hyaluronan injection) for osteoarthritis
  • Intravenous infusion of medications such as steroids, cyclophosphamide, zoledronate and biologic agents.

We believe in a holistic approach to patient care and strive towards engaging patient participation in order to ensure that the best outcomes are achieved (disease remission, quality of life). Our nurse clinician provides patient education in terms of diagnosis and management (lifestyle, drug therapy) of the patient’s underlying rheumatic condition.

The Division has been an active participant in clinical trials involving biologic agents in the treatment of rheumatic diseases and has clinical experience with the use of biological therapies in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and SLE.
We have strong links with other departments in NUH such as the orthopaedics, renal, physiotherapy, radiology, ophthalmology, medical social work teams in view of the multi-system nature of the illnesses that we treat.
