Overview

The Emergency Medicine Department (EMD) of the National University Hospital sees 90,000 patients each year. It serves a 928-bed tertiary care University Hospital, with close research and training ties with the National University of Singapore.

It is staffed by 13 registered emergency specialists with a common vision:
To develop a world-class dept which offers a high tertiary level of clinical service in an environment of excellent teaching and training, vibrant research and healthy work-life balance.

Our specialists are engaged in a number of specialised and multidisciplinary research efforts and clinical trials, reflecting our broad array of scientific interests.

Each specialist has areas of interest and had further training in: Emergency cardiac care, Disaster Medicine, Observational Medicine, Trauma, Toxicology. Other areas of interest include Critical care, Risk Management, Health Processes, Prehospital care and Geriatric Emergency care.

The department prides herself in practicing evidence based medicine that has translated into clinical protocols. These protocols evolved into Clinical Practice Guidelines that culminated in writing of a book “Guide to the Essentials in Emergency Medicine” published by McGraw-Hill Publications. The book has gone into the 6th print run.

Majority of the faculty members of EMD are trained facilitators of evidence based medicine practice and has contributed actively in the development of evidence based medicine culture in the hospital.

Being affiliated to the only medical school in Singapore (Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS), the department plays an active role in the education of medical students. The department also coordinates the rotation of medical students amongst the emergency departments in Singapore.

EMD also coordinates the Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training programmes for the hospital.

The department consists of a group of physicians with a strong passion for teaching and through the development of well planned training programme, the department has achieved consistent results in the post graduate education of future emergency physicians. Being a tertiary hospital with a good variety of clinical cases, it is also a highly popular rotation amongst the trainees of Emergency Medicine. The chief of the department also chairs the National Combined Advance Specialist Training Committee in Emergency Medicine which oversees training curriculum of emergency specialist trainees in Singapore.

The emergency department at NUH provides a nurturing environment for both research and training while providing a balance lifestyle for everyone.
