Hugo PS Van Bever completed his medical studies at the State University of Ghent, Belgium (1971-1978) and did his training in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital, State University of Ghent, Belgium from 1978 – 1983. Following that he became Resident in Paediatric Allergy and Pulmonology, University of Antwerp, Belgium from 1984-1993, Associate Professor in Paediatric Allergy and Pulmonology, University of Antwerp, Belgium from 1993-1997 and Professor in Paediatric Allergy and Pulmonology, University of Antwerp, Belgium from 1997. From 1997-2001 Hugo Van Bever was also the Head of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Antwerp, Belgium.
He joined the National University Singapore as Professor and Senior Consultant in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology The Department of Paediatrics in National University Hospital in June 2002.
Hugo Van Bever is member of different national and international societies, including The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), The European Society of Pediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology (ESPACI), The European Respiratory Society (ERS), Past Secretary of the Group Paediatric Asthma and Allergy of the ERS, Past Secretary of The Belgian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BELSACI) and Board Member of The Flemish Group of Allergologists. Since 2002 he became a member of APAPARI (Asian Pacific Association of Paediatric Allergy, Respirology and Immunology). On 28-30 November 2003 he organized an international APAPARI workshop in Singapore, entitled “Asthma and allergies in young children in South-East Asia”. On December 11, 2004 he organised a national workshop “Treatment of Childhood Atopic Dermatitis”. He was an active member of the scientific committee of the APAPARI-KAPARD joint meeting in Seoul (7-9 April, 2005). In April 2006 he organised a joint meeting between APAPARI and the Indonesian Society of Allergy and Immunology, in Jakarta. He attended the second NUS-Harvard Medical International Program for Educators in 2005.
He is now an active member of the board APAPARI, in which he is responsible for research and education in paediatric allergy.
He has been Associate Editor of The European Respiratory Journal (1993-1998). Currently, he is Editorial Board member of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. He is reviewer for The European Journal of Paediatrics, Paediatric Allergy and Immunology, Allergy, Paediatric Pulmonology, The European Respiratory Journal, Paediatric Research, Pediatrics and Archives Diseases of Childhood.
Hugo Van Bever defended his PhD thesis successfully in June 1993 at the University of Antwerp. The title of this thesis is: “Late asthmatic reactions in childhood asthma and influence of specific immunotherapy upon the late asthmatic reaction.”
He has published more than 250 papers in national and international journals. His main research interest areas are pediatric allergy and pediatric respiratory infections. These include atopic diseases in infancy and prediction of atopic diseases in newborns (i.e. study of cord blood cells); inhaled corticosteroids and growth in childhood asthma; mechanisms of immunotherapy in childhood asthma (i.e. influence on bronchial inflammation and cytokine profiles); allergic reactions and food allergy in atopic dermatitis ; lung function testing in preschool children ; epidemiology of atopy and asthma. In the area of respiratory infections, his main interests are on viral bronchiolitis, relationship between viral infections and allergy, viral-induced ARDS, and epidemiology of respiratory infections. |
