Overview
The Thoracic Surgery unit at the National University Hospital in Singapore provides comprehensive and top quality health services that encompass the full spectrum of lung and chest diseases. The majority (>95%) of the surgeries can now be performed with minimally invasive techniques using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). Previously for many years, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) or thoracoscopy was only used to perform minor thoracic procedures, including wedge lung biopsy, pleural biopsy, drainage of pleural effusion, pleurodesis, exploratory thoracoscopy, and thoracoscopic sympathectomy. With improvements in techniques and technology, thoracic surgeons with advanced minimally invasive skills can now apply VATS to perform major thoracic operations as well.
These operations can be technically challenging and often require expert training in minimally invasive thoracic surgery. In the United States, it is estimated that only less than 5% of major thoracic resections are currently performed using VATS. Our Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery is currently one of the few centres of excellence in the world that performs many major thoracic operations using advanced minimally invasive techniques. Our surgeons are dedicated professionals and are committed to providing the best service to every patient with great compassion and care.
