Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapy is performed by accredited respiratory therapists. Multiple functions are performed and these include:

  • Maintaining an open airway for trauma,
  • Assisting in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and support
  • Providing life support for patients who can’t breathe on their own
  • Administering inhaled gases and medications
  • Conducting tests to measure lung function and to evaluate sleep disordered breathing
  • Intensive care for post-surgery and paediatric patients

Respiratory therapy also involves highly sophisticated equipment and adjuncts (e.g. high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide).
