Obstructuve Lung Disorders

Asthma
A very common condition that affects both young and old whose small airways are extremely sensitive to various triggers. Patients usually have cough, shortness of breath and wheeze. Lung function tests show airways with reversible obstruction. A multi-pronged treatment approach including inhaled steroids is adopted.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Smokers are affected by this condition in which their lungs are damaged by the prolonged effects of tobacco. Symptoms include recurrent cough, phlegm, and difficulty in breathing, and lung function tests show obstructed airways. Though medications and rehabilitation will help, it’s best to stop smoking to avoid further damage to the lungs.

Bronchiectasis
In this condition, the airways are damaged and dilated with repeated infections. Patients experience cough and recurrent yellow sputum, often with difficulty in breathing. Antibiotics and inhalers form part of the treatment approach.
