Adjunct Associate Professor Khong Kok Sun specialises in the management of simple and complex limb fractures, as well as fractures involving the pelvis and acetabulum. He has a particular interest in the use of minimally invasive techniques in the treatment of a variety of fractures, including long bones and the pelvis.
Dr Khong completed his medical degree at the University of Singapore in 1977. He trained in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital, obtained his FRCS and MMed in General Surgery in 1983, and completed his training in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1988. Since 1988, he has spent nearly three years in various fellowship positions overseas, specialising in advanced techniques in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. These include the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital and the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, UK in 1985. This was followed by a year's fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota and the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA. In 1994, he underwent another fellowship in trauma surgery, this time at Johns Hoskins Hospital, Baltimore, and Los Angeles County Hospital, California in 1994.
Dr Khong is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at NUS and is has been an Adjunct Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at NUS since 2002. He is a member of the Division of Graduate Medical Studies at NUS, as well as a member of the Education Task Force for the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He has been on the Advisory Committee on Orthopaedic Surgery at the Ministry of Health, Singapore since 1999. He was previously the Program Director for the Orthopaedic Surgery Specialty Training Committee of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He is a member of the Specialist Medical Boards (Orthopaedics) for the Singapore Armed Forces since 1994. He was previously the commander of one of the reserve Surgical Hospitals for the Singapore Armed Forces, and is still a Volunteer Lieutenant Colonel for the Medical Corps, Singapore Armed Forces. He is a Visiting Consultant at St Luke's Community Hospital, Singapore.
Dr Khong is also active internationally in the field of Orthopaedic Trauma. He is on the teaching faculty of AO International, and has been on several committees in charge of reviewing, steering and updating the AO International trauma Course syllabus. He is a Consultant for the Trabecular Metal (Trauma) Team, as well as a Consulting Surgeon for Trauma Applications, for Zimmer, Inc., USA.
Dr Khong has the presented over 100 scientific research articles at local, regional and international research meetings. He is also the author of 16 book chapters. He is one of the co-authors of the upcoming 2nd edition of the AO Principles of Fracture Management. Some of his research interests over the years are listed below:-
