Medical Writing Workshop

Dr
Denis D'Auria, a trained facilitator for the Tim Albert
Medical Writing Workshop - Writing a
Journal Article & Getting it Published, was in town to
conduct two sessions of the workshop.
Participants to the workshop picked up tips on how to
get started on writing and managing the writing process.
The small group sessions allowed participants to present
and share their first drafts with fellow
participants and critically appraise one another's
work-in-progress.

Developing Clinical Guidelines

Facilitators from the Scottish Intercollegiate
Guidelines Network (SIGN) conducted a
Developing Clinical Guidelines Workshop in October 2009.
Participants to the workshop were introduced to the SIGN
guideline development methodology.
They also learnt how to set key questions, identify and
evaluate evidence,
which are critical to developing guidelines.

Dr
Jeffrey Drazen presented several different sessions on
topics related to medical writing and shared his
knowledge on asthma and pulmonology related issues. Dr
Drazen, a specialist in
pulmonology, maintains an active research programme. He
has published more than 300 articles on topics such as
lung physiology and mechanisms involved in asthma

Dr Fiona Godlee, Editor-in-Chief, BMJ
 
 
Close
to 40 participants attended the BMJ Masterclass on
Medical Writing. Dr Godlee shared with participants the
Future Directions of BMJ and the How to Publish. Participants
also benefited from the paper discussion sessions where
Dr Godlee reviewed manuscripts submitted by
participants.

Effective Writing for Healthcare Professionals
 
 
A
total of 14 participants attended this course run by two
"graduates" of the Tim Albert Training Centre.
Participants learned how writing works and how changes
in knowledge and technique can have a major impact in
their written product.

Dr Richard Smith, former editor-in-chief of the BMJ
 
 
 
For
three days, participants picked up valuable pointers
from Dr Richard Smith on various issues related to the
publication process. His lecture on "The Trouble with
Medical Journals" was as thought-provoking as it was
entertaining.
Distinguished Editor Series:The JAMA Masterclass
on Medical Writing
 
 
Dr
Catherine deAngelis shared with participants the "keys"
to preparing manuscripts that will have a good chance of
meeting editors' approval. Her parting shot, "Don't send
in your first draft. Send in something you will be proud
to have people read."
