Dr Thong graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. After completing his Otolaryngology residency in Singapore, he proceeded onto a clinical fellowship at the Lahey Clinic, USA for subspecialty training in rhinology and sinus surgery. He is currently a Consultant with the National University Hospital.
In addition to general ear, throat and neck conditions, Dr Thong has particular interest in the diagnosis and treatment of nose and sinus disorders like nasal obstruction, nose bleeding, sinus infections, sino-nasal polyps, skull base tumours, and nasal allergy. He performs various procedures and operations, either in the clinic or in the operating theatre. These include endoscopic sinus surgery, as well as minimally invasive sinus surgery with balloon technology (“balloon sinuplasty”).
His research interests revolve around sino-nasal conditions especially nasal polyps, and chronic sinusitis, as well as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr Thong is also a clinical tutor with the National University of Singapore where he is involved in the teaching of medical undergraduates, mentoring of junior doctors and delivering of lectures to both otolaryngology residents and fellow doctors in general practice.
