Tips On Stoma Care

Observe the condition of your stoma, it should look moist, red and shiny.
Clean your stoma gently as it can bleed easily with rough handling.
Change your baseplate/wafer 5 to 7 days or early if leakage occurs.
Empty your stoma bag/pouch when it is one third full and before going to bed.
Bath either with or without stoma appliances attached to the body.
Ensure that your appliance fits well and does not leak.
Cut the baseplate/wafer hole 2mm larger than the size of your stoma.
Do not apply oil, cream or powder around the stoma area, unless recommend by your doctor or stomal therapy nurse.
Shave the hair around your stoma area regularly to prevent folliculitis (inflammation).
Place a cushion (small pillow or folded thick towel) to protect your stoma when wearing a seat belt.
