What Is Osteoarthritis?
|
| |
Osteoarthritis is often known as
degenerative arthritis. It is a "wear-and-tear" joint disease,
affecting mostly middle-aged and older people. The joints commonly
affected are the knee, hip and spine.
The disease affects the tissue (known as cartilage) at the bone ends.
The smooth surface of the cartilage is damaged and becomes rough.
In time, the cartilage wears down completely and there is poor cushioning
between the bone ends. The bones rub against each other and cause
pain. At the moment, there is still no cure for osteoarthritis but
the treatments available presently are more advanced than a few years
ago. |
