After Surgery |
| |
| How soon can I return to normal activities after the knee
replacement surgery? |
| |
 |
Successful knee replacement surgery
will reduce knee pain and stiffness. You may be allowed to start
your daily activities a few months later. |
 |
You will need to use a walking frame for about
4 to 6 weeks after your surgery. There after, you will be able
to walk with a cane. |
 |
You may be allowed to drive a car about 2
months after your surgery. |
 |
Even if you have fully recovered, you are
advised not to take part in contact sports or activities that
will put too much stress on your knee. |
 |
It is important to talk to your surgeon before
starting any new sport or activity. |

| Recovery at home |
| |
| Your knee will improve
steadily. At this time, you can help in your own recovery by
doing the following: |
 |
Follow your surgeon's instructions.
|
 |
Take good care of yourself. |
|
| |
| For the first year after surgery, you will have
a few follow-up visits with your surgeon to check your progress. |
| |
| However, you should see a doctor immediately if you have: |
| |
 |
Fever - more than 38°C |
 |
Sudden change of pain (different from the usual
pain) |
 |
Too much drainage from the wound |
 |
Unusual redness, swelling, and warmth at wound |
 |
Calf pain and swelling |
 |
Difficulty in breathing |
 |
Chest pain |
|
| |
