Knee Replacement Surgery

Admission to hospital

You will be admitted to the hospital 1 day before surgery. The doctor in the ward will examine you and the site of surgery will be marked. You must sign a consent form before surgery.

When you go to the hospital, you are advised to bring along the following items:

Shoes with non-slip sole.
Toiletry items like shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste and comb.
All the medications you are currently taking.
Walking frame (if you have one).

Before surgery

On the night before surgery, you cannot eat or drink anything after midnight.
On the morning of surgery, you need to take a shower with antiseptic lotions. Wash your hair as well.
You will be asked to remove your dentures, hairpins, jewellery, and nail polish. Ask your family to keep your valuables.
You will be taken to the operating room on a trolley.

What happens at surgery?

You will be under general or regional anaesthesia.
Your surgery will take about 2 to 3 hours.
A small tube (intravenous line) will be placed in your arm to allow the doctors to give you fluid, pain medication, antibiotics and other medications.
A tube may be placed in the wound to drain fluid and prevent it from collecting in your knee.
A bulky dressing will be put around your knee.

What can I expect after surgery?

You will spend about 1 to 2 hours in the recovery room where you will be monitored closely. Once you are fully awake, you will be taken back to the ward.
You will have medications to relieve your pain. You may get your pain medication and antibiotics through the small tube at your arm, through injection or pills.
You will feel nauseous and may vomit due to the anaesthesia and pain medications. This is normal. You will be allowed clear fluid at the beginning and subsequently, more solid food will be allowed.
