How Do I Prepare For Knee Replacement Surgery?

Once you and your surgeon have decided to have your painful knee replaced, a date will be fixed for your surgery.

You will need a full clinical assessment, blood tests, ECG (electrocardiogram) and chest X-rays. This can be done before admission to the hospital (Pre-Admission Testing). Your surgeon will check the results of the tests to make sure that you are ready.
Remember to inform your surgeon of all the medications you are taking. You may have to stop taking some medications (eg. aspirin, cardiprin, ticlid and warfarin) at least 10 days before the planned surgery.
It is important to keep good general physical health before the surgery. Your doctor may ask you to lose weight in order to reduce the load on your knee after surgery. You can start an exercise programme to build up your upper body and arm strength. This is to help you to use a walking frame in the recovery period.
You may need to have a dental check before the surgery to check for loose teeth and oral infection.
