Knee anatomy

Your knee is a hinge joint that is made up of the thighbone (femur), the shinbone (tibia) and the kneecap (patella). The end of the thighbone slides on top of the shinbone. The knee joint is surrounded by muscles, ligaments and tendons. The membrane (synovial membrane) surrounding the joint produces a small amount of fluid to ‘oil’ the joint. Smooth cartilage covers the surfaces of the ends of the bones. This cartilage helps make joint movement easy and painless.

When the cartilage is damaged (ie become rough or worn down from arthritis) the knee bones will rub against each other during motion. This causes pain.

What is total knee replacement?

In total knee replacement surgery, the damaged surfaces of the knee joint are removed and replaced with artificial parts (prosthesis). Your new knee is made up of a metal shell that covers the thighbone and a metal and plastic plate on the shinbone. The surface under the knee-cap may also be replaced with a plastic part. The artificial parts will then be secured into place by cement.

What can I expect from my artificial knee?

The surgery aims to relieve your pain. Most people will have a better knee movement and are able to carry out many activities of daily living. About 90% of total knee replacements will last for 10 years. However, your knee replacement is not a normal knee. Therefore, there will be modifications to some activities.
