Recovery After Surgery

How soon can I return to normal activities after the hip replacement surgery?

Successful hip replacement surgery will reduce your hip pain and stiffness. You may be allowed to start your daily activities a few months later.
You need to use a walking frame or Quad-stick for about 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. After that, you will be able to walk with a cane.
You may be allowed to drive a car after 2 to 3 months.
Even after you have fully recovered, you are advised not to take part in contact sports and activities that will put too much stress on your hip.
It is important to talk to your doctor before you begin any new sport or activity.

Recovery at home

Your hip will improve steadily. You can help in your own recovery:

Follow your surgeon's instructions.
Watch your hip precautions.
Take good care of yourself.

For the first year after surgery, you will have a few follow-up visits with your surgeon to check your progress.

However you should see a doctor immediately if you have:

Fever - more than 38 °C.
Sudden change of pain (different from the usual pain).
Too much drainage from the wound.
Unusual redness, swelling, and warmth at wound.
Calf pain and swelling.
Difficulty in breathing.
Chest pain.
