After Surgery |
| |
| How soon can I return to normal activities
after the hip replacement surgery? |
| |
Successful hip replacement
surgery will reduce your hip pain and stiffness. You may be
allowed to start your daily activities a few months later. |
You need to use a walking frame
or Quad-stick for about 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. After that,
you will be able to walk with a cane. |
You may be allowed to drive a
car after 2 to 3 months. |
Even after you have fully recovered,
you are advised not to take part in contact sports and activities
that will put too much stress on your hip. |
It is important to talk to your
doctor before you begin any new sport or activity. |

| Recovery at home |
| |
| Your hip will improve steadily. You can help in your own recovery:
| |
Follow your surgeon's
instructions. |
Watch your hip precautions. |
Take good care of yourself. |
| |
| For the first year after surgery, you will have
a few follow-up visits with your surgeon to check your progress. |
| |
| However you should see a doctor immediately if you have: |
| |
Fever - more than
38 °C. |
Sudden change of pain (different
from the usual pain). |
Too much drainage from the wound.
Unusual redness, swelling, and
warmth at wound. |
Calf pain and swelling. |
Difficulty in breathing. |
Chest pain. |
