| Your
Hip Surgery |
| |
| Before Surgery |
| |
 |
On the night before
surgery, you cannot eat or drink anything after midnight. |
 |
On the morning of surgery, you
need to take a shower with antiseptic lotions. Wash your hair
as well. |
 |
You will be asked to remove your
dentures, hairpins, jewellery, and nail polish. Ask your family
to keep your valuables. |
 |
You will be taken to the operating
room on a trolley. |
|
| |
| |
| What happens in surgery? |
| |
 |
Your surgery will
take about 2 to 3 hours. |
 |
You will be under general or
regional anaesthesia. |
 |
A small tube (intravenous line)
will be placed in your arm to allow the doctors to give you
fluid, pain medication, antibiotics and other medications. |
 |
A tube may be placed in the wound
to drain fluid and prevent it from collecting at your hip. |
 |
A firm dressing will be put over
the hip wound. |
|
| |
| |
| What can I expect after surgery? |
| |
 |
You might spend about
1 to 2 hours in the recovery room where you will be monitored
closely. Once you are fully awake, you will be taken back to
the ward. |
 |
You will have medications to
relieve your pain. You may get your pain medications and antibiotic
through the small tube in your arm, through injections or pills.
|
 |
You may feel nauseous and may
vomit due to the anaesthesia and pain medications. This is normal.
You will be allowed clear fluids at the beginning and subsequently,
more solid food will be allowed. |
|
| |
| |
| Exercise programme and physiotherapy |
| |
| Once you are fully awake on the same day of your
surgery, you can begin the exercises that can help you recover. It
is important to take deep breaths and cough. These help prevent lung
problems that might delay your recovery. |
| |
|
|
|
 |
Ankle pumps help reduce
swelling and risk of blood clots in your legs. |
 |
Do about 10 to 20 times
every hour when you are awake. |
|
 |
Thigh exercises are recommended
as well. |
 |
Gently contract and release
the front muscles in your thigh. |
 |
Do 10 to 20 times every
hour when you are awake. |
