| How
Do I Prepare For Hip Replacement Surgery? |
| |
| Once you and your surgeon have decided to have your
painful hip replaced, a date will be fixed for your surgery. |
| |
 |
You will need to
undergo a full clinical assessment, blood tests, ECG (electrocardiogram)
and chest X-rays. This can be done before admission to the hospital
(Pre-Admission Testing). Your surgeon will check the results
of the tests to ensure that you are ready. |
 |
Remember to inform your surgeon
of all the medications you are currently taking. You may have
to stop taking some medications (eg. aspirin, cardiprin, ticlid
and warfarin) at least 10 days before the planned surgery. |
 |
It is important to keep good
general physical health before the surgery. Your doctor may
ask you to lose weight in order to reduce the load on your hip
after surgery. You can start an exercise programme to build
up your upper body and arm strength. This is to help you to
use a walking frame during the recovery period. |
 |
You may need to have a dental
check before the surgery to check for loose teeth and oral infection. |
|
| |
| |
| Admission to hospital |
| |
| You will be admitted to the hospital 1 day before
surgery. The doctor in the ward will examine you. You must sign a
consent form before surgery. |
| |
| When you go to the hospital, you are advised to
bring along the following items: |
| |
 |
Shoes with non-slip
sole. |
 |
Toiletry items like shampoo,
toothbrush, toothpaste and comb. |
 |
All the medications you take. |
 |
Walking frame (if you have one). |
