Gastrectomy (Stomach Surgery)

How Does The GI (Gastrointestinal) Care Nurse Help?

Patients going for gastrectomy will be referred to the GI Care nurse by the consulting surgeon. She will work with the patients and family members during the period from preparation for surgery to recovery.

Before surgery, the GI Care Nurse sees the patients and their families to provide support as well as information on what can be expected before and after surgery.

After surgery, she will share with them some measures that can be taken to avoid complications with eating.

After discharge, the nurse sees the patients at the Specialist Outpatient Clinic to monitor their progress at home, and to encourage adequate nutrition. Problems arising at home during this period are discussed to find a solution that is practical for the patients and family.
